California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Millard, Bailey, 1859-1941

Bailey Millard (1859-1941) was born in Markesan, Wisconsin. Much of his education was obtained as a printer's devil and tramp printer. He worked his way west through a succession of newspaper and printing shops. In the 1890s he was city editor or literary editor of the San Francisco Call and the Examiner, and in 1918-1919 was managing editor of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin .
